Introducing our
Commander of the 8th District Police
By B.B. St. Roman
Major Edwin C. Hosli, Jr., has been in the NOPD for 27 years and arrived
here in January of 2007 after many years as Commander of the 2nd District. He is
known for his straight-forward, systematic approach to making changes until
he has the right team and environment to be effective.
On his first day in the 8th District station, he noticed how dark it was and
how decrepit the walls and carpet were, so he immediately secured a 12-foot
ladder and some 30 light bulbs to brighten it up. He emphasized that his
officers need a clean, neat environment to work in, and that bringing
improvements to the station was just the beginning of improving the whole
District: you start at home.
On the subject of fighting crime and tracking statistics, Major Hosli
quickly implemented a new system of daily crime maps, whereby the staff
starts with a fresh map on Sunday and crime icons are added each day, so
that by the end of the week they can see emerging patterns of locations and
types of crimes.
When he saw the many Vespa scooters parked in the yard and learned that very
few officers were trained to operate them, he organized classes for them.
He also wants us citizens to be more involved and immediately CALL 911 with
suspicious persons and crimes. He endorses the NOcrimeline and wants us to email him directly with problems and suggestions, but
he does request that we not send emails after 10 pm at night. His address is ehosli@cityofno.com.
